Dear Client,  

                                                 

                                                    Effective immediately:   

           A Taxonomy Code is Now Required in Order to Bill to Blue Shield

 

 

To confirm that your clinic is set up correctly, please verify the following:

 

1.   On the Utility/Set Up/Parameter screen:

 

 If your Billing Method is C/Clinic, make sure to enter the taxonomy code in the <Taxonomy Code> field on the Utility/Set Up/Clinic screen.
Note: See Steps To Add A Taxonomy Code below.

 If your Billing Method is D/Doctor, enter the taxonomy code in the <Taxonomy> field on the Utility/Provider screen for each Provider.

 

2.   Once the taxonomy codes are entered, go to the Utility/Insurance screen and make sure the <Taxonomy> field is set to 'Y'es for all Blue Shield insurance codes.

 

 

 

Steps To Add A Taxonomy Code

 

1.   Go to Utility/Set Up/Field Choices/Modify.
Note: Only users with a "high" security level will have the 'Set up' menu option.

 

2.   Enter 'CL_TAXONOMY' in the <Field Name> field, press [Enter].

 

3.   Check the <Field Value> column for your taxonomy code.
Note: If you do not know your taxonomy code see How To Lookup A Taxonomy Code (2 Options) below.

 

4.   Your cursor will be in the CMD column. Press 'A'dd to add a new record. Enter 'N' in the <Custom(Y/N)> column and press [Enter]. Enter your taxonomy code in upper case in the <Field Value> column, press [Enter]. Then enter the taxonomy description in the <Description> column and press [Enter]. Once your cursor is in the CMD column again you may exit this screen.  

 

 


How To Lookup A Taxonomy Code (2 Options)

 

It is possible to look up taxonomy codes either  from the NPPES website or the Taxonomy website, as follows:

 

I. NPPES Website

 

1.  Go to https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/NPPES/NPIRegistryHome.do

 

2.  Under 'Search the NPI Registry', select one of the following:

 

 Search for an Individual Provider 

 Search for an Organizational Provider

    

3.  Enter your NPI and select 'Search'.

 

4.  Verify the displayed information.  

 

5.  Look under 'Provider Taxonomy' for the taxonomy code.

II. Taxonomy Website

 

1.  Go to http://www.wpc-edi.com/content/view/793/1 

 

2.  Look under the Health Care Provider Taxonomy Code Set.
