Claim Rejections Due to Miscellaneous Information in the Claim Field Used for the Unique Tracking Number
CR8562, “Medicare Claims Processing for Part A, Part B, DME, and Home Health and Hospice Services for Prior Authorization,” instructed the Shared System Maintainers to accept a UTN and to create edits (MCS edit 065L and 065M) for the UTN. This system change was effective with the October 2014 system release. As a result, MACs are experiencing claims suspending or rejecting due to miscellaneous information in the claim field used for the UTN. A fix was implemented on Friday, 11/21/2014, to alleviate the claim rejects going forward for those MACs who are currently not participating in the prior authorization programs.
Provider Action
Claims were rejected because invalid information was in the UTN field. While this field was not used by CMS in the past; changes were recently made to allow the use of the UTN field in unique circumstances in the future.
Providers who are experiencing claim rejections when submitting unnecessary values in the 2300 or 2400 REF01 G1 segment need to remove this data from this field and resubmit their claims for processing.
