In an effort to advance toward an electronic environment, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has developed software called Medicare Remit Easy Print (MREP) that enables physicians and suppliers1 to view and print Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)-compliant 835s from their own computer. Remittance advices printed from the MREP software are similar to the current Standard Paper Remittance Advice (SPR) format.
The MREP software uses an imported file in the HIPAA-compliant 835 format sent by a Medicare contractor [Carrier/Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) or Durable Medical Equipment (DME MAC)].2 Other electronic formats cannot be used.
Before using the MREP software, physicians and suppliers must have access to HIPAA 835 files. Physicians and suppliers should work with their Medicare contractors to determine the best procedures for receiving the HIPAA 835.
This software offers important capabilities that allow physicians and suppliers to:
View, search, and print remittance information
Print and export reports containing remittance information
Availability and Cost
The MREP software is available to physicians and suppliers free through their Medicare contractor. Information on the software (including how to obtain a free copy) is available on Medicare contractor websites.
