Answers to Common Management Report Questions
What is an occurrence?
An occurrence is a count of how many times a procedure was performed. Intellect counts 1 per occurrence (how many times it is posted to the reported item).
For example:
1. Occurrence 1 date of service (DOS) |
= 1 |
2. Occurrence for 2 DOS |
= 2 |
Total Occurrence |
= 3 |
What is a patient count?
A patient count is the number of unique patients.
What is a visit?
A visit* is how many times a patient came in during a period.
Scenario A: One patient came in once in January and receives
an injection J2001. The occurrence = 1.
Occurrence = 1
Patient Count = 1
Visit = 1
Scenario B: One patient comes in twice in January and receives
2 injections the first visit and 1 injection the second visit.
Occurrence = 3
Patient Count = 1
Visit = 2
* Depending on the grouping on the report, the same Visit may fall under
multiple groups.
If we add the Visit column, it will be higher than the 'actual' visits.
For example, if you run a Utilization by Procedure Category Report,
if a patient came in for the following:
100 - Office Visit, the Visit column =1
200 - Lab Work, the Visit column =1
300 - X-ray, the Visit column = 1
So, each visit # in the Visit column is unique to each row; however, under
the Total Visits at the bottom of the report, Total Visits would = 1 and
not 3 for the patient, because you only saw one patient but posted charges
for the different procedure categories.
The column totals are unique to the report and the Totals at the bottom
are unique to the report.
