ICD-10 Compliance Deadline
Per Palmetto GBA, there will be a partial code freeze prior to ICD-10 implementation. The partial freeze will be implemented as follows:
o The last regular annual update to both ICD-9 and ICD-10 code sets [were] made on October 1, 2011.
o On October 1, 2012 there will be only limited code updates to both ICD-9 CM and ICD-10 code sets to capture new technology and new diseases.
o On October 1, 2013, there will be only limited code updates to ICD-10 code sets to capture new technologies and diagnoses. There will be no updates to ICD-9 CM on October 1, 2013 as the system will no longer be a HIPAA standard.
Who Needs to Transition?
The CMS website states that ICD-10 will affect diagnosis and inpatient procedure coding for everyone covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), not just those who submit Medicare or Medicaid claims. Everyone covered by HIPAA who transmits electronic claims must also switch to Version 5010 transaction standards. The change to ICD-10 does not affect CPT coding for outpatient procedures.
